FLUTES

ABOUT NATIVE STYLE FLUTES:

Our Native style flutes are made by splitting a board in half and removing the center.  During this process, a slow air chamber is created and an air channel is carved. The two halves are then sealed back together.  A block (also called a "Bird") is than made. The block sits on top of the flute, above the slow air chamber.  The correlation of the air chamber, air channel, and block, is what creates the sound a flute produces.

Our flutes are made in the Woodlands style.  The Woodlands style of flute has an air-channel carved into the top of the flute, and has a flat-bottomed block.  Because of this, any object with a flat bottom can be used as a block for a Woodlands style flute.

Woodlands style flutes are easy to play, requiring only that you breathe lightly into them.  They have an earthy tone, and are known for their clear volume and bright sound.

All of our flutes come with our trademark block, which is hand carved by Gary and made to symbolize the movement of wind or breath.

The beautiful wood burned and painted designs on our flutes are done by artist Gennese Page.

We make flutes in a wide range of musical keys, including high range, mid range, low range/bass, and drones.  A drone flute is a flute that has two barrels that can be played at the same time for a harmonizing effect.

Our most popular flutes are the mid-range keys of F# and G.  This is probably because F# and G flutes are the most common for Native flute music.  F# flutes have a soothing and earthy tone.  In the scale of F#, whatever is played sounds melodic.   In Native music, it is often said that Mother Earth resonates in the key of F#.
