GOURDS
By Patty Neff
Patty Neff creates gorgeous coiled pine needle gourds.

A gourd is the hard shell of the fruit of the gourd plant, which is dried and seeded to create a bowl.  Patty then expertly wraps the rim of the gourd with ponderosa pine needles. The pine needles are coiled and bound together with artificial sinew.

Patty often dyes the outside of the gourds, and sometimes adds bead accents.

Patty gathers the ponderosa pine needles from the trees that grow around the old St. Mary's Mission in Omak, Washington.  She gets many of the gourds from her sons, who grow the gourds for her on their farm in George, Washington.
